The AWS Class ER317L SAW is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel wire that contains around 18–20% Chromium, 11–15% Nickel, 3–4% Molybdenum, and ≤0.03% Carbon. The molybdenum boosts resistance to pitting in environments rich in chlorides. When used with the right flux, it ensures outstanding weld metal quality. Typical mechanical properties include a tensile strength of at least 550 MPa, yield strength of at least 350 MPa, elongation of at least 30%, and impact toughness suitable for low-temperature applications. The low carbon content helps reduce carbide precipitation during welding, which in turn enhances corrosion resistance in intergranular zones.
